Aquarius Innovations for a greener world

Since 2018, Aquarius Innovations has developed a patented production process serving both the agricultural sector and the consumer market. We provide a wide range of products—including plant plugs, plant liners, transport liners or discs, green roof substrates, hanging baskets, and plant containers—designed to efficiently absorb and retain water and nutrients.

Our materials create a stable, adjustable humidity level that supports proper germination and rooting of cuttings, cells, and seeds. This leads to improved growth performance, reduced loss rates, and faster harvests. In addition, our solutions help compensate for unstable conditions caused by weather influences or depleted soils, resulting in more reliable and consistent cultivation outcomes.

Our solutions

AI sustainability formula

Water absorption

Cost-saving for our customers’ logistics budgets:
Our plant liner absorbs 18 to 22 liters of water per square meter, while the hydrogel coating absorbs 50 to 70 times its own weight in water. This high absorption capacity ensures efficient moisture management, reduces the need for frequent watering, and supports more economical transport and handling.

Water saving mechanism

Customers can reduce water consumption by up to 75% and nutrient usage by up to 50%.
Our materials are pH- and EC-neutral, ensuring they have no negative impact on the soil.

Energy saving

Energy savings of 40 to 70% can be achieved thanks to the reduced resource usage enabled by the material across multiple application areas.

Collaborations

We are committed to local production processes and strategic partnerships. By collaborating closely with regional stakeholders, we strengthen each link in the value chain and ensure that our products are manufactured responsibly, efficiently, and with minimal environmental impact. This approach not only enhances product quality and supply reliability but also supports a more sustainable and resilient production ecosystem.

Global scalability

We prefer to work with suppliers and co-producers who actively contribute to the optimal execution of our projects, enabling us to create a positive impact throughout the entire production process.

Sustainable products

Our materials are 100% biodegradable and retain their active function for 1 year or 5 to 7 years, depending on the soil type. They are produced from natural fibers—such as jute, flax, and hemp—and can be fully customized. These fibers are combined with our patented hydrogel to ensure optimal performance in moisture and nutrient management.

The cultivation of jute contributes significantly to climate mitigation. During its growth, jute absorbs up to 150 kilotons of CO₂ and nitrogen, equivalent to the annual nitrogen emissions of approximately 20 cows. As a result, our material not only supports plant growth but also contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible value chain.

About us

Since 2015, Aquarius Innovations BV has been developing a patented production process from which various applications have been successfully tested and refined. Our primary focus lies in the agricultural and horticultural sectors.

Our absorbent plant liner captures water and nutrients and gradually releases them back into the plant’s environment. The humidity level can be fully adjusted to meet customer-specific requirements.

We approach landscaping services, greenhouse horticulture companies, garden centers, tree nurseries, suppliers involved in the transport of trees, plants, and flowers, green roof developers, and garden designers.

More about us

Sustainable products for a greener world

The products of Aquarius Innovations BV are composed of natural fibers—such as jute, flax, and hemp—combined with our patented hydrogel. Both components can be fully customized to meet customer-specific requirements, ensuring optimal humidity control for each application.
In addition to improving plant growth and stability, our materials also generate clear environmental benefits.

How we remain sustainable

Sustainability for Global Industries

The products of Aquarius Innovations support municipal and urban authorities, the horticulture sector, garden centers, and the transport industry (flowers, plants, and trees) in achieving their environmental objectives. Our solutions contribute to a measurable reduction in carbon and nitrogen emissions, lower water and fertilizer consumption, decreased energy usage, and reduced logistics costs.

Municipality and Government Agencies

The products of Aquarius Innovations can reduce logistics costs for municipalities, cities, and government agencies by 20 to 40%. In addition, water, nutrient, and energy consumption are significantly lowered. By cultivating natural base materials such as jute, carbon and nitrogen emissions are further reduced, contributing to a more sustainable and climate-friendly value chain.

Garden Centers and Related Companies

For consumers, we have developed products for hanging baskets, flower boxes, plant pots, herb liners, and green roof applications. With these solutions, households can reduce water consumption by up to 75%. In the Netherlands alone, this could lead to an annual saving of approximately 7.5 billion liters of water if house and garden plants were equipped with plant liners in the soil, pot, basket or box.

Nutrient use can be reduced by up to 50%, as the plant liner absorbs nutrients effectively and releases them gradually near the plant’s roots. When widely adopted by households, the use of our plant liners would also contribute to lowering carbon and nitrogen emissions thanks to the sustainable cultivation of the natural base materials used in our products.

Tree, Plant and Flower Transport

In the transport of trees, plants, and flowers, large volumes of water are traditionally used to keep products hydrated during transit. By using our growth and transport liners—capable of absorbing 18 to 22 liters of water per square meter—combined with our hydrogel coating, which absorbs 50 to 70 times its own weight, water consumption can be reduced by up to 75%.

Lower water usage results in less weight, leading to reduced fuel and energy consumption, fewer nutrient losses, and a decrease in carbon and nitrogen emissions. These advantages apply to both national and international transport flows.

Upon arrival at their destination, the liners continue to support the plants, reducing loss rates and ensuring higher-quality trees, plants, and flowers at the end of the journey.
